How to Treat Acne With Tretinoin

Tretinoin (vitamin A acid) is a retinoid used in treatment of skin conditions such as severe acne (pustules), rosacea (red spots on the forehead, cheeks and nose), stretch marks, wrinkles and pigmentation. Tretinoine causes the damaged skin to be replaced by a new skin by accelerating cell division in the upper skin layer. Thus new skin cells are generated faster. This way impurities such as stains, wrinkles and obstructed sebaceous glands disappear, and subcutaneous inflammations can heal.

How to apply Tretinoin Cream properly:

Before you start using Tretinoin, please read patient leaflet if available or consult your pharmacist if you have any questions about Tretinoin before taking this medication. Apply Tretinoin Cream or lotion once a day in a thin layer on the acne affected areas of clean and dry skin (preferably in the evening before bed). Treat only necessary areas and avoid contact with eyes, nose, wounds and healthy skin. If this happens, rinse the cream or lotion thoroughly with water. Wash your hands after using Tretinoin. Wait at least half an hour before using any other cream or cosmetic product on the treated skin.

Tretinoin is prescribed:

  • Acne, or juvenile acne. This condition occurs through blocked pores, pimples and (sometimes) subcutaneous infections.
  • The couperose: red spots and apparent veins on the cheeks, the tip of the nose and the forehead.
  • Skin damaged by UV rays causing wrinkles, dark spots and rough patches.
  • Vergeture: small scars of the skin where it has been distended. Stretch marks often appear after a pregnancy or as a result of weight loss.
  • Hyperpigmentation: irregular and brown pigment spots usually appear on the face. Hyperpigmentation can occur especially during hormonal changes (Chloamse), with age or following the use of certain drugs.

Tips: Tretinoin can cause abnormalities in the fetus. Do not use this product when you are pregnant or have plans to become pregnant soon. Use Tretinoin only after consulting a doctor when you are breastfeeding. Never apply the cream or lotion on or around the nipple.
