How to Treat Acne With Erythromycin

Erythromycin is a topical medication often prescribed for the treatment of mild to moderate acne that has not responded to other topical antibiotics (ie. clindamycin, tetracycline, minocycline or benzoyl peroxide). Erythromycin is an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory action which works by stopping the growth of bacterial infections. Erythromycin is available in oral or topical (gel or cream) forms. Both may be used to reduce the bacterial buildup in acne. Severe forms of acne, also known as nodular and cystic acne may involve the treatment by retinoids (Isotretinoin) to avoid scarring if left untreated. Erythromycin is also used orally in treatment of acne. Although Erythromycin has a long history of use in acne treatment, it's not that effective in compare to newer drugs such as: Clindamycin, Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Minocycline etc. However, Erythromycin is still the best option for pregnant or breast-feeding women and children. Erythromycin may also used to prevent bacterial infection following surgery, burns or trauma.

How to use Erythromycin:

Topical Erythromycin

Gently wash the acne affected area with soap and warm water, rinse your skin well and pat dry prior to any topical cream or gel applied. In case of shaving wait for 30 minutes to avoid irritation of shaved skin. Spread the medicine lightly over the acne affected areas and allow it to dry. Erythromycin gel works best if applied at the same time every day. For best results take Erythromycin gel for the full course of acne treatment.

Erythromycin capsules:

Adults

250mg - every 6 hours before or with meals.
500mg - every 12 hours may be given if necessary; b.i.d. dosage should not be used if dosage exceeds 1gr.

Children

The usual dose is 30-50 mg/kg/day erythromycin, in divided doses given twice a day or every 6 hours. In severe acne infections, this dose may be doubled; elevated doses should be given every 6 hours. The drug should be given before or with meals.
