How to Treat Acne With Accutane (Isotretinoin)

Accutane (Isotretinoin) medication has been used for the treatment of extremely stubborn and severe cystic acne that has not responded to other treatment (e.g., benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin applied to the skin or tetracycline or minocycline taken by mouth). Accutane is a retinoid drug which works by decreasing sebum (facial oil) production. Large amounts of sebum may cause severe forms of acne, also known as nodular and cystic acne. Severe acne may cause permanent scarring if left untreated.

How to apply Accutane (Isotretinoin) properly:

Before you start using Accutane, please read the medication guide provided by your pharmacist. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about Accutane before taking this medication. Do not crush or chew the capsules, swallow whole. Take a pill with a full glass of water, and do not lie down for 10 minutes after taking it. Accutane is usually taken twice a day for 15-20 weeks, or as prescribed by your doctor. Food helps increase absorption of Accutane into your bloodstream. The dosage is based on your medical condition, weight, and response to treatment. Your acne may get worst during the first days of taking this drug. It may take up to 1-2 months before you notice improvements and full benefit of this medication. If severe acne returns, a second course of treatment may be started after you have stopped taking the drug for 2 months. The manufacturer does not recommend long-term use of Accutane.
